EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print showcases Piero della Francesca's (1416-1492) masterpiece, "Portrait of Federico da Montefeltro and His Wife, Duchess Battista Sforza of Urbino," created between 1472 and 1474. The Duke of Urbino, Federico da Montefeltro (1422-1482), was a renowned military leader and patron of the arts during the Italian Renaissance. Piero della Francesca, a leading artist of the period, captured the duke's regal presence and intelligence in this portrait. Federico is depicted in three-quarter view, wearing a rich, fur-lined robe and holding a falcon, symbolizing his status as a skilled hunter and warrior. His wife, Duchess Battista Sforza of Urbino (1451-1472), is shown in profile, her hands delicately folded in her lap. The couple's pose and attire reflect the harmony and prosperity of their rule. Piero della Francesca's innovative use of linear perspective and subtle chiaroscuro techniques adds depth and realism to the painting, which was a significant departure from the flat, two-dimensional style prevalent during the period. This portrait is considered one of the earliest examples of the use of linear perspective in Italian painting. The painting was originally housed in the Montefeltro family's private collection and later acquired by the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England, in 1845. It is a testament to the enduring influence of Piero della Francesca and the artistic achievements of the Urbino court during the Renaissance.
