In this historic photograph, Swiss scientist Auguste Piccard (left) and his colleague Paul Kipfer are seen celebrating their successful ascent to a record-breaking altitude of 16,201 meters (53,157 feet) on May 27, 1931. The intrepid explorers embarked on their journey from Augsburg, Germany, and landed safely in the Austrian Alps after an exhilarating and groundbreaking flight.
