EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the calloused hands of sailmaker William Leitch tell the story of a lifelong devotion to his craft. The image captures a moment in the old sail loft in East Loch Tarbert, Scotland, where William continues a family tradition that spans three generations. The palm he uses is a cherished relic from his grandfather's time at sea, having sailed on the legendary Cutty Sark and braved the treacherous waters of Cape Horn numerous times before retiring ashore to start the business. William's hands bear the marks of a life spent sewing sails. The rough, tough skin, pockmarked with callouses, is a testament to the strength and dexterity required to ply his trade. The needle glides effortlessly between his fingers, guided by the thread coiled around his wrist. The room is filled with the scent of sailcloth and the sound of the sewing machine, as William meticulously stitches together another sail, each stitch a link in a long and proud maritime legacy. The sail loft, nestled on the West Coast of Scotland, is a place where the past and present converge. The sails that William creates are not just functional covers for boats, but rather, they are works of art, born from the skill and dedication of a master craftsman. Each sail is a testament to the enduring connection between the sea, the wind, and the human spirit. William's hands, with their rich history and stories, serve as a reminder of the deep-rooted seafaring traditions that have shaped the Scottish coastline for generations.
