EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 24: Phaenicophaeus pyrrhocephalus, the Red-Faced Malkoha, as depicted in a stunning 18th century illustration by Pieter Cornelis de Bevere from the Loten Collection of Coloured Drawings. This exquisite painting, created between 1754 and 1757, showcases the Red-Faced Malkoha perched gracefully on a curved branch. The bird's long, curved beak is prominently featured, adding to its distinctive appearance. The Red-Faced Malkoha, also known as the Red-Faced Mouhcoulis or the Red-Faced Coucal, is a species of cuckoo belonging to the family Cuculidae, order Cuculiformes, and class Aves. Native to Africa, this bird is characterized by its bright red face, which contrasts sharply with its otherwise dark plumage. Pieter Cornelis de Bevere, the artist behind this masterpiece, was a renowned Flemish painter and draftsman, born in Antwerp on March 11, 1710. He is known for his detailed and accurate illustrations of birds, mammals, insects, and plants. His work was highly regarded during his time and continues to be admired today for its beauty and scientific accuracy. Joan Gideon Loten, the collector of this remarkable collection of coloured drawings, was a Dutch physician and naturalist. He amassed an extensive collection of natural history specimens and illustrations during his travels in Africa and the East Indies. The Loten Collection, which includes this painting of the Red-Faced Malkoha, is now housed in the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Red-Faced Malkoha during the 18th century, offering a window into the past and showcasing the exceptional talent of Pieter Cornelis de Bevere.
