EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing historical image from the late 17th century Russia, we find Peter the Great (1672-1725) in the role of a determined hairdresser, surrounded by his boyar entourage at court. The scene is set in the year 1698, during a pivotal moment in Russian history when Peter was actively working to westernize his country. Peter's progressive vision extended beyond architecture, military tactics, and social structures. He also sought to adopt Western European fashion, including the shaving of beards, which were a long-standing tradition in Russia. In an effort to modernize his people, Peter decreed that beards would no longer be allowed at court and imposed taxes on those who continued to wear them. In this photograph, Peter is personally demonstrating the new fashion trend by shaving one of his boyars. The boyar, visibly uncomfortable, submits to the emperor's will, as the other courtiers look on with a mix of curiosity and apprehension. This event marked a significant shift in Russian society, symbolizing the beginning of a new era in which traditional customs were replaced by Western European influences. The image captures the tension and transformation that came with Peter's reforms, as well as the power dynamics at play in the Russian court during this period. It is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the historical events that shaped the course of Russian history. Circa 1698, Russia. Determined to westernize his country, Peter the Great forbids the wearing of beards at court and taxes those who retain them. Here, he personally shaves one of his boyar entourage, marking a significant shift in Russian society. (Rights Managed from Mary Evans Prints Online)
