EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the McDonnell Douglas DC-9-31 aircraft with the registration number VH-TJU, also known as John Roe (MSN 47552 / Line Number 640). The DC-9-31 is a twin-engine jet airliner produced by McDonnell Douglas, a leading American aerospace manufacturer. This particular aircraft made its first flight on August 19, 1971, and was initially operated by Trans Australia Airlines (TAA), an Australian national flag carrier. The DC-9-31 in this image exudes an air of nostalgia, as it was taken around 1979. The aircraft's sleek design, with its distinctive T-tail and winglets, is a testament to the advanced aviation technology of the time. The aircraft's registration, VH-TJU, is proudly displayed on its tailfin, adding a sense of identity and history to this magnificent machine. Unfortunately, the story of VH-TJU does not have a happy ending. It was eventually sold to ABX Air in the United States on November 30, 1989, and later scrapped. Despite its impressive history and contributions to the aviation industry, this once-proud aircraft met its end in the scrapyard. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the transient nature of aviation and the ever-evolving world of transportation. The DC-9-31, with its iconic design and significant role in aviation history, continues to captivate the imagination of aviation enthusiasts and historians alike.
