EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, the Coastal 2 supply ship looms large on the horizon of RAF Stanley in the Falkland Islands, casting a long shadow over the base and the nearby NAFI (Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes) bar to its right. Taken in 1984, this image captures the stark contrast between the much-maligned Coastal 2 and the more favourably regarded NAFI bar, a beloved institution for the military personnel stationed there. At the time, the Coastal 2 was a source of frustration and disappointment for the RAF personnel at Stanley. On one occasion, the supply ship was delayed, leaving the base with limited vegetable options for nearly two weeks. The troops were left to endure meals consisting solely of beetroot and spinach, a monotonous and unappetizing diet that only added to the ship's already poor reputation. Despite the hardships, the NAFI bar stood as a beacon of comfort and camaraderie for the military personnel. The bar was a place where they could unwind, socialize, and enjoy a well-deserved break from the rigors of military life. The image of the Coastal 2 and the NAFI bar side by side serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and joys of life in a remote military outpost, and the importance of finding solace and community in even the most unlikely of places. This photograph, taken in 1984, is a testament to the human spirit and the ability to find happiness and connection in the most unexpected circumstances. It is a powerful reminder of the experiences of those who served in the Falkland Islands during that time and the enduring memories that remain.
