EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the signing of the Peace of Arras in 1435, an historic moment that brought an end to the long-standing civil war in France. The treaty was brokered between two formidable figures of the time: Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, and Charles VII, King of France. The civil war, which had been raging for years, had left the country devastated and in need of a resolution. Philippe le Bon, a powerful ruler in his own right, had been a significant player in the conflict, using his military might to expand his territories at the expense of the French crown. Charles VII, on the other hand, had been struggling to assert his authority over the fractious nobility and maintain control of his kingdom. The Peace of Arras marked a turning point in French history. The treaty not only ended the civil war but also established a new balance of power between the monarchy and the nobility. Philippe le Bon recognized Charles VII as the legitimate king of France, and in return, the king granted him various concessions and acknowledgments of his territorial claims. The print depicts the two leaders seated at a table, surrounded by their advisors, as they put quill to parchment to sign the treaty. The atmosphere is one of solemnity and resolution, with both parties recognizing the importance of putting aside their differences for the greater good of the realm. The peace was not to last forever, but it provided a much-needed respite from the chaos and destruction of the civil war. This historical print is a testament to the power of diplomacy and the importance of finding common ground in times of conflict. It serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that Philippe le Bon and Charles VII played in shaping the course of French history.
