EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Paul Saunière, a prominent figure in 19th century French literature and journalism. Born in 1827, Saunière began his career as a journalist, working for various newspapers and magazines in Paris. However, it was his association with the legendary Alexandre Dumas that would bring him lasting fame. Saunière served as Dumas' secretary from 1852 until the author's death in 1870. During this time, he played a crucial role in managing Dumas' vast literary output and business affairs. Saunière's dedication and expertise proved invaluable, as Dumas was a prolific writer who produced novels, plays, and journalistic pieces at an astonishing rate. Saunière's own literary talents were not to be overshadowed, however. He wrote under the pseudonym "Gill" and produced several novels, including "Le Secret de la Tour Eiffel" and "Le Mystère de la Rue Morgue." These works, while not as well-known as Dumas' masterpieces, demonstrate Saunière's skill as a storyteller and his ability to captivate readers. Despite his accomplishments, Saunière remains a somewhat enigmatic figure in literary history. His contributions to the literary world, both as a journalist and a novelist, have been overshadowed by the more famous Dumas. However, this photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a vital role in shaping the literary landscape of 19th century France. Saunière's legacy extends beyond his literary pursuits. He was also a dedicated family man, married to his wife, Marie-Louise, and the father of five children. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures Saunière in the prime of his life, a testament to his many accomplishments and enduring influence on French literature.
