EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of the vibrant and scandalous Party at Silver Slipper nightclub in the roaring twenties. At the heart of the scene, surrounded by a group of young, bright, and silver-haired revellers raising their glasses for the photographer, is Kate Meyrick (1875-1933). An Irish businesswoman and the undisputed Queen of the London nightclub scene, Kate ran the notorious "43" jazz club at 43 Gerrard Street in Soho. Kate's club was notorious for its late hours, breaches of licensing laws, and her penchant for bribing policemen to turn a blind eye. Her defiant spirit and determination to provide an unforgettable social experience for her patrons earned her several prosecutions and even a prison sentence. Despite the controversies, Kate's influence extended beyond the walls of her club. Three of her daughters married peers of the realm, further solidifying her place in London society. This photograph is a testament to the allure and excitement of the 1920s nightlife scene, where Kate Meyrick reigned supreme as the enigmatic and unforgettable hostess. This image, with its rich history and intriguing characters, is a must-have for any collection of vintage photographs or social history enthusiasts. The silver slipper beckons, and the party at 43 continues to enthrall and captivate us, just as it did in the twenties.
