EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of Paris during the early days of the First World War, a French woman stands transfixed before a Scottish Highlander soldier, her gaze fixed on the traditional kilt that adorns his uniform. The year is 1914, and the appearance of these men in such distinctive garments had caused quite a sensation in the French capital. The kilted regiments, hailing from Scotland, had arrived in Paris as part of the British Expeditionary Force, and their unique attire became the subject of numerous jokes and cartoons. The French population, accustomed to the more conventional military uniforms, found the sight of these men in their colorful kilts and tall tartan caps both amusing and intriguing. The woman in this photograph, with a playful smile on her face, seems to be appreciating the sight of the soldier's legs, clad in the plaid fabric, as much as the novelty of the Highland regiment's appearance. This image offers a glimpse into the lighter moments of a time when the world was on the brink of great change, and the unexpected encounters that could occur even in the midst of war.
