EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the thrilling moment of the 200-meter final at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. The image shows American swimmer Duke Kahanamoku, or Craig, crossing the finish line in first place, with his countryman, Duke Coe (Lippincott), close behind in second place. The British swimmer, Henry Taylor Applegarth, can be seen in third place, just touching the wall. The excited crowd is shown in the background, their faces filled with anticipation and joy. The 1912 Olympics marked the first time that the 200-meter freestyle was contested as a separate event from the 100-meter freestyle. The race took place on July 15, 1912, at the Stockholms Stadion pool. Craig set a new world record of 2:11.4 minutes, breaking the previous record set by his teammate, Lippincott, in the semi-finals. Applegarth finished just 0.6 seconds behind Craig, making it a close and exciting race. The three swimmers are shown here in the final moments of the race, their bodies taut with exertion and determination. The photograph captures the essence of the Olympic spirit, with athletes from different nations coming together to compete in a fair and friendly competition. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of the Olympics and the enduring appeal of the 200-meter freestyle.
