Public schoolboys at Farnborough on an Officer Training Corps camp. From top, Charterhouse boys marching back to camp, rifles held upright. Centre left shows Harrow School boys up early and out of their tents. On the right Charterhouse have their dinner served out. Botton right shows St Pauls School at dinner and bottom left shows Merchant Taylors School off to the Cooks tent. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of the Officer Training Corps (OTC) camp at Farnborough in 1909, where young men from prestigious public schools honed their leadership and military skills. The scene unfolds with Charterhouse boys, dressed in uniform and bearing rifles, marching back to camp in an orderly fashion. In the center left, Harrow School students are seen emerging from their tents, starting their day early. To the right, Charterhouse boys are having their dinner served to them, while St. Paul's School students make their way to the Cook's tent for their meal in the bottom right corner. Established in 1908, the OTC system was a response to the British Army's pressing need for officers and non-commissioned officers who could effectively lead and command. The OTC attracted young men from universities and schools, providing them with essential training that prepared them for military service. With 23 OTC contingents in the Senior Division at universities and 166 in the Junior Division at schools, this system played a crucial role in shaping the next generation of military leaders. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of these young trainees, showcasing their dedication and discipline as they embraced the challenges of military training. The scene is a testament to the enduring legacy of the OTC, which continues to inspire and prepare future leaders in various fields, both military and civilian.
