This satirical print from the early 20th century captures a humorous moment in the relationship between Russia's Tsar Nicholas II and the French people. The image, titled "Nicolas II as a Cockerel," shows Tsar Nicholas II in the guise of a rooster, perched atop a pedestal, with Marianne, the symbol of France, holding a knife and a plate beneath him. The caricature, produced around the year 1900, was created during a time when Tsar Nicholas II was enjoying a certain level of popularity in France. The Russian monarch's popularity in France can be attributed to his wife, Alexandra of Hesse and by Rhine, who was of German descent and had close ties to the French royal family. Additionally, Tsar Nicholas II had visited France several times, and the French people were impressed by his gracious demeanor and his wife's elegant style. However, the satirical print of Tsar Nicholas II as a cockerel is a reminder that even during this period of relative goodwill, there were still those who poked fun at the Tsar. The use of the rooster as a symbol is significant, as it is often associated with the French national emblem, the Gallic rooster.
