EDITORS COMMENTS
Nicolas Caussin, or Clouwet as he was also known, was a prominent French Jesuit theologian and spiritual director of the 17th century. Born in 1583 in the village of Saint-Germain-du-Plain, Caussin joined the Society of Jesus at the age of 19. He quickly distinguished himself as a brilliant scholar and was sent to the Jesuit college in La Flèche for further studies. This striking portrait, taken in 1651, captures Caussin in the prime of his life. His oval face, with its thin, angular features and deep-set eyes, conveys a sense of intensity and intellectual rigor. The dark, somber background accentuates the contrast between the bright folds of his Jesuit cloak and the white collar and cuffs of his habit. Caussin's influence on the Jesuit order was significant. He was a leading figure in the Counter-Reformation movement and played a key role in the development of the Jesuit spirituality of the time. He authored numerous works on theology, spirituality, and pastoral care, and was known for his guidance of the spiritual lives of many prominent figures, including the future King Louis XIV of France. Despite his many accomplishments, Caussin's life was not without controversy. He was accused of heresy by some of his critics and was subjected to a lengthy investigation by the Inquisition. Ultimately, he was cleared of any wrongdoing, but the ordeal took a toll on his health and he died in 1651, just a few months after this portrait was taken. Today, Nicolas Caussin is remembered as a towering figure in the history of the Jesuit order and the Catholic Church. His legacy continues to inspire generations of scholars, theologians, and spiritual directors, and his influence can be felt in the many institutions and organizations that bear his name.
