EDITORS COMMENTS
Selim III, depicted in this stunning 19th-century engraving by Lemaitre, Lalaisse, and Moret, ruled the Ottoman Empire as sultan from 1789 until his assassination in 1808. The image is taken from the historical work "Historia de Turquia" by Joseph Marie Jouannin and Jules Van Gaver, published in 1840. Selim III is shown in regal attire, wearing a long, flowing turban adorned with precious stones and feathers, and a voluminous robe embroidered with intricate designs. His face is framed by a full, well-groomed beard, a sign of his status and maturity. The sultan is depicted holding a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other, symbolizing his power and authority over the vast Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire was at a crossroads during Selim III's reign. The empire was facing increasing pressure from European powers, particularly Russia, and Selim III attempted to modernize the military and administration to better defend against these threats. However, these reforms were met with resistance from traditionalist elements within the empire, leading to a power struggle that ultimately contributed to Selim III's downfall. Despite the challenges he faced, Selim III is remembered as a visionary leader who tried to steer the Ottoman Empire in a new direction. This engraving captures the essence of his regal presence and the complexity of his reign, offering a glimpse into the rich history and society of the Ottoman Empire during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
