EDITORS COMMENTS
Adelaide Hall, the groundbreaking jazz innovator and Broadway star of the Harlem Renaissance, is seen outside her beloved home at 1A Collingham Road in the fashionable district of Kensington and Chelsea, London, during the 1950s. Having made her escape from the racial prejudice and economic hardships of America in the late 1930s, Adelaide found a warm welcome and a newfound sense of freedom in Britain. From the 1940s through the early 1990s, she became one of the country's most cherished entertainers, gracing stages with her captivating voice and infectious stage presence. Born in Philadelphia in 1901, Adelaide's career began in the 1920s, a time when jazz music was revolutionizing American culture. She quickly rose to fame as a singer and actress, performing on Broadway in productions such as "Rufus Jones for President" and "Porgy and Bess." However, the racial discrimination she faced in America led her to seek opportunities abroad. In London, Adelaide found not only a supportive audience but also a new home. She became a fixture of the city's jazz scene, performing at renowned venues like the 100 Club and the Palladium. Her popularity extended beyond the jazz world, and she appeared in films, on radio, and even on television. This photograph captures Adelaide in a moment of respite outside her Collingham Road home, a testament to her enduring legacy as a trailblazing artist and beloved entertainer.
