EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Aubrac, also known as Brother Saint Aubrac or Brother Pierre-Joseph Redoube, was a French Catholic priest and member of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, more commonly referred to as the Knights Hospitaller or the Order of St. John. The image depicts Saint Aubrac in his religious attire, holding a crozier, a pastoral staff symbolizing his role as a bishop or abbot. The year 1848 is inscribed on the print, indicating that it was likely produced during or shortly after Saint Aubrac's death. Born in 1794 in the village of Saint-Aubrac, in the Lozère department of France, Pierre-Joseph Redoube entered the Hospitallers at an early age. He distinguished himself through his piety, learning, and dedication to the care of the sick and the poor. In 1836, he was appointed Bishop of Saint-Flour, a position he held until his death in 1848. Saint Aubrac is remembered for his charitable works, his efforts to improve the living conditions of the poor, and his devotion to the sick. He was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1922 and is venerated as a saint. The Hospitallers, also known as the Knights of Malta, are a historic religious order founded in Jerusalem in the 11th century to provide care for pilgrims and the sick. They played a significant role in the Crusades and have since expanded their mission to include various charitable and humanitarian activities. Saint Aubrac's legacy as a devoted priest and bishop, as well as his association with the Hospitallers, make this image a powerful reminder of the enduring influence of religious orders in European history.
