EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph from Lorenz Oken's Universal Natural History, published in Stuttgart in 1841, showcases an impressive array of eel species. The common eel (Anguilla anguilla), also known as the European eel, is depicted in the lower left corner. Above it, the gulper eel (Saccopharynx spp.) with its large, gaping mouth is a formidable sight. The electric eels, both the knifefish (Gymnotus electricus) and the electric eel (Electrophorus electricus), are represented in the middle of the print. The smallhead eel (Leptocephalus morrisii) and the sand eel (Ammodytes tobianus) are shown in the upper left corner. The cusk eel (Ophidium barbatum) and the red bandfish (Cepola rubescens) are located in the upper right corner. The tube-eye eel (Synodontis tuberosus), the stylephorn eel (Chauliodus spp.), and the king of herrings or ribbonfish (Regalecus glesne) are depicted in the lower right corner. The cutlassfish (Lepidopus species) and the largehead hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) are located at the bottom of the print. This intricately detailed print not only showcases the diverse range of eel species but also highlights the meticulous natural history illustrations of the 19th century.
