EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving, drawn and engraved by Richard Polydore Nodder, showcases two exquisite species of Spoonwings, Nemoptera bipennis and Nemopterella africana, also known as Portuguese and African Nemopteryx respectively. The intricately detailed illustration is taken from William Elford Leach's Zoological Miscellany, published in London in 1815 by McMillan. Spoonwings, also known as Doored Flies or Lacewings, belong to the order Neuroptera. These insects are characterized by their large, transparent wings, which resemble spoons due to their distinctive wing venation. The Spoonwings depicted in this illustration exhibit their unique wing structure, with delicate veins creating intricate patterns that resemble lace. Nemoptera bipennis, the Portuguese Spoonwing, is native to Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean region. Its wingspan measures around 35-40mm. The insect's body is slender and elongated, with a pair of long, slender antennae. The wings are translucent, with a brownish-yellow tint and a distinctive black spot near the base of each wing. Nemopterella africana, the African Spoonwing, is native to Africa and has a slightly larger wingspan, measuring around 45-50mm. Its wings are a pale yellowish-brown colour, with a darker brown border. The body is also slender and elongated, with long, slender antennae. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the intricacy and detail of 19th-century scientific illustration, providing a fascinating glimpse into the natural world and the early days of entomological research.
