EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the skull of a Buru babirusa, scientifically known as Babyrousa babyrussa. The babirusa, also referred to as the "deer-pig," is an endemic species of pig native to the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi and Babirusa. This particular skull is believed to have originated from the Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities of J.P. Breyn. The image was created by Johann Ludwig Colve and engraved by Johann Sebastian Leitner for Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, published in Nuremberg in 1771. The Deliciae Naturae Selectae was a natural history publication that showcased a variety of exotic and rare specimens from around the world. The babirusa is easily identified by its distinctive tusks, which grow not only from the upper jaw but also from the lower jaw, forming a pair of curved horns. This adaptation is unique among pigs and is thought to have evolved as a defense mechanism against predators. The babirusa is critically endangered, with an estimated population of only around 2,500 individuals. Habitat loss, hunting, and competition with domestic pigs are the primary threats to the species. Conservation efforts are underway to protect the babirusa and its habitat, including the establishment of protected areas and community-based conservation programs. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Buru babirusa and the curiosity and wonder that drove collectors and naturalists to amass unique specimens in their Cabinets of Curiosities.
