This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, showcases two intriguing ground squirrel species: the Richardson's ground squirrel (Urocitellus richardsonii) and the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus). The Richardson's ground squirrel, named after the famous explorer Sir John Richardson, is a medium-sized rodent endemic to North America. They are characterized by their reddish-brown fur, short bushy tail, and distinctive white stripe running down the length of their back.
