EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts the Red-shanked Douc Langur, Pygathrix nemaeus, a critically endangered primate species native to the forests of Vietnam and Laos. The Red-shanked Douc Langur, also known as the Red-shanked Douc or Nemean Langur, is recognized by its distinctive red lower limbs and tail, contrasting with its greyish-brown body and black face. This elegant and graceful monkey is a herbivore, feeding primarily on leaves, buds, and fruits. The Red-shanked Douc Langur is classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and hunting. Their forest habitats have been severely impacted by logging, agriculture, and human settlement, leading to population declines and fragmentation of their populations. Additionally, they are hunted for their meat and fur, which are highly valued in local markets. This beautiful lithograph is from the Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, or Natural History Picture Gallery, of Georg Friedrich Treitschke's Gallery of Natural History in Leipzig, Germany. The gallery was established in 1835 and was one of the most significant natural history collections in Europe during the 19th century. This particular lithograph was created around 1840, providing a rare glimpse into the natural history of the Red-shanked Douc Langur during a time when their populations were still abundant. Today, conservation efforts are underway to protect the remaining populations of the Red-shanked Douc Langur, including habitat restoration, anti-poaching patrols, and community-based conservation initiatives. It is essential that we continue to raise awareness about the plight of this endangered primate species and work together to ensure their survival for future generations to enjoy.
