EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Phyllis Barron is captured in the act of creating, her focused expression reflecting the deep concentration required for the intricate process of hand-block printing. Surrounded by a clutter of wooden blocks, ink, and fabric, Barron's hands deftly carve away at a new block, shaping it to bring her unique designs to life. A former student at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in London, Barron had initially found success designing patterns for cretonne printers. However, she grew disillusioned with the industrial production methods and yearned to return to the traditional techniques of hand-printing. With the assistance of fellow artist Dorothy Larcher, Barron was preparing for an exhibition of her hand-block printed textiles at the esteemed Mayor Gallery in Sackville Street. The image of Barron carving her own hand blocks is a testament to her dedication and passion for her craft. Each block represents hours of painstaking labor, as the artist carefully chisels away at the wood to create intricate patterns and designs. The resulting textiles, bursting with color and character, were a celebration of the artist's creativity and commitment to preserving the art of hand-block printing. This photograph, taken in 1926, offers a glimpse into the world of two pioneering women artists, who, through their shared love of design and innovation, were pushing the boundaries of the textile industry and leaving a lasting impact on the art world.
