During the Paraguayan War, the Emperor of Brazil assumed command of the Brazilian army and travelled to Alegrete on his way to Uruguaiana, along with his two sons-in-law, the Duke of Sax-Cobourg and Gotha, and the Count of Eu. The emperor sits on a chair, arm resting on a box covered with maps. His sons-in-law stand beside him, the Duke holding his military cap in one hand, the Count also grasping the scabbard of his sword. Date: 1865
