EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Georg Wolfgang Knorr for his Deliciae Naturae Selectae of Kabinet van Zeldzaamheden der Natuur, published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg in 1771, showcases a fascinating assemblage of crustaceans. The central focus of the image is the Northern stone crab, Lithodes maja 1, with its distinctive long, slender claws and mottled, grayish-brown carapace. To the right, two brown crabs, Cancer pagurus 2, are depicted. The first, Crabe epineuse, or spiny crab, is easily identified by its spiny legs and red eyes, while the second, Crabe spinosus, or spiked crab, displays a more elongated body and larger pincers. To the left of the Northern stone crab, two additional crustaceans are illustrated. The first is the ecrevisse a coque unie, or unified pea crab, Brachyurus laevis, which is characterized by its rounded, uniformly-shaped shell. The second, not clearly labeled in the engraving, is likely another species of crab, adding to the intrigue and diversity of this zoological illustration. This enchanting print was once part of the extensive collection of Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew's Wunderkammer, or Cabinet of Curiosities, in Nuremberg. The meticulous attention to detail and the vivid colors employed by Knorr in his engraving serve to highlight the unique beauty and intricacy of these crustacean specimens, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the 18th century.
