EDITORS COMMENTS
Louis Antoine, Duc d'Angouleme (1776-1849), is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph from the renowned French publication "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix. The Duke is shown wearing the uniform of a colonel in the Garde-du-corps de Monsieur, an elite bodyguard regiment that served the King of France. The grand-cordon bleu sash and the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece, one of the most prestigious orders in the Ancien Régime, add to the Duke's regal appearance. Louis Antoine, the second son of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, was born on March 27, 1776, in the Palace of Versailles. He was only ten years old when the French Revolution began, and his family was forced to flee France. The Duke spent the rest of his life in exile, trying to regain the French throne. He died on February 18, 1849, in Florence, Italy. The lithograph is a beautiful example of the meticulous attention to detail that characterized the "Costumes Historiques de la France" series. The intricate design of the uniform, the rich colors, and the lifelike portrayal of the Duke all contribute to the image's historical and artistic value. The lithograph is a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the Ancien Régime and the importance of military uniforms as symbols of power and status. This handcoloured lithograph is a rare and valuable find for anyone interested in French history, military history, or the history of fashion. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when uniforms were more than just clothing; they were a statement of power, wealth, and prestige.
