EDITORS COMMENTS
Jeanne Becu, later known as Madame du Barry, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph from the 19th century. The image, created after a painting housed in the Royal Château of Versailles, showcases the elegance and opulence of the French court during the reign of King Louis XV. Born in 1743 in Bordeaux, Jeanne Becu rose to prominence in the late 1750s when she became the king's mistress. Her beauty and charm captivated Louis XV, and she quickly became a fixture at the royal court. Madame du Barry was known for her extravagant lifestyle and her love of fashion, which is evident in this detailed depiction of her attire. The lithograph, produced by Cornart de Vaubernier and published in Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," captures the essence of the Rococo era. Madame du Barry's dress is adorned with intricate floral patterns and delicate lace, while her hair is styled in the latest fashion – a high, piled wig with curls cascading down her back. However, Madame du Barry's time at the court was not without controversy. Her rise to power and her extravagant lifestyle made her a target for criticism, and she was eventually expelled from Versailles during the Reign of Terror in 1793. Despite this, she remains an intriguing figure in French history, and this beautiful lithograph serves as a testament to her beauty and the opulence of the French court during the reign of King Louis XV.
