Jack the Giant Killer
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a classic English folktale that has been captivating audiences for centuries. This charming postcard, dated circa 1906, presents an abridged version of the timeless story accompanied by beautiful illustrations by N. Buchanan. The story begins with Jack, a humble and resourceful young man, who, in an attempt to earn some extra money, trades his cow, Daisy, for some magic beans. Skeptical of their worth, Jack's mother throws the beans out of their cottage window in frustration. The next morning, a gigantic beanstalk emerges from the ground, reaching the clouds. Jack, with his quick wit and courage, climbs the beanstalk and enters a world of giants. In this magical realm, Jack encounters a series of challenges, including the fearsome giant's wife, who tries to cook him for supper. Jack manages to outsmart her by pretending to be a roast, and when the giant's wife cuts into him, he jumps out and kills her. Jack then confronts the giant himself, using the giant's own weapons against him and ultimately slaying him. With the giants defeated, Jack descends the beanstalk and returns home, bringing with him the giant's gold and treasures. The postcard illustrations beautifully capture the essence of this adventure, with Jack standing triumphantly over the defeated giant, and the towering beanstalk stretching up to the heavens. This postcard is a delightful reminder of the enduring appeal of Jack the Giant Killer, a tale of courage, resourcefulness, and the triumph of good over evil. The illustrations by N. Buchanan add an extra layer of magic to the story, transporting us to a world of giants and enchantment.
