EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from the pages of John Mason Good's Pantologia, a New Encyclopedia published in London in 1813, showcases two fascinating species of rodents: the Guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) and the Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris). The Guinea pig, also known as the domestic cavie or simply cavy, is a small, tailless mammal native to South America. It is believed to have been domesticated by the Incas as early as 5000 BCE for food and as a companion animal. The Guinea pig in this engraving is depicted with a variegated coat, adding to its charm. In contrast, the Capybara, the world's largest rodent, is native to Central and South America. Capybaras are semi-aquatic animals, living in groups near bodies of water. They have webbed feet and a coat that helps them blend in with their aquatic environment. The Capybara in this engraving is shown in its natural habitat, with its distinctive, round, almost hairless ears and short, dense, brownish-red coat. Sydenham Edwards, a renowned English naturalist, was the artist behind this beautiful and intricate engraving. The meticulous details and vibrant colors bring these two species to life, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century. This engraving not only serves as a testament to the artistry of the time but also highlights the fascination with the natural world and the desire to document and preserve its wonders.
