EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Green Silver-lines and Mocha Moth Feeding on Maple Leaves," was created by Jacob L. Admiral in 1774 for the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects) published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam. The engraving depicts two intriguing insects in their natural habitat. The first is the Green Silver-line, Pseudoips prasinana, identified by its delicate, almost translucent wings adorned with silver lines. The second is the Mocha Moth, Cyclophora annularia, which is shown in its adult form with its rich, mocha-colored wings and distinct markings. The insects are depicted in the midst of feeding on the lush, vibrant maple leaves of Acer campestris. The maple tree, with its distinctive autumnal hues, provides a beautiful backdrop to the intricate details of the insects' anatomy. The engraving also includes the larva, pupa, and caterpillar stages of the Green Silver-line, showcasing the full metamorphosis of this fascinating creature. This engraving is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized the natural history illustrations of the 18th century. It offers a glimpse into the natural world of over three centuries ago and serves as a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the insect kingdom.
