EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Giant Loquat, or Eriobotrya japonica, a tropical fruit tree native to China and Japan. The illustration, created by the skilled hand of botanical artist William H. Prestele, was published in Henry van Deman's Report of the Pomologist, a comprehensive study of fruit cultivation in the United States, produced by the US Government Printing Office in 1892. The Giant Loquat tree is known for its large, juicy fruit, which resembles a small peach but has a unique, sweet-tart flavor and a texture reminiscent of a ripe medlar. The tree itself can grow up to 30 feet tall and is often cultivated for both its delicious fruit and its attractive, glossy leaves. The lithograph, produced by the renowned A. Hoen & Co., showcases the tree in all its splendor, with its branches laden with ripe fruit against a backdrop of lush foliage. This beautiful and intricate image offers a glimpse into the rich botanical knowledge of the late 19th century and the artistry of its creators.
