EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print depicts the European pilchard, Sardina pilchardus, also known as the pilchard or the Atlantic herring, a small, silver-colored fish that is a common inhabitant of the European waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The European pilchard is a member of the Clupeidae family, which is the largest family of fish in the world, and is characterized by its elongated, streamlined body and a single dorsal fin. The European pilchard is an important species in the marine food chain and is a valuable food source for both humans and other marine organisms. It is a schooling fish and forms large shoals that can be seen migrating off the European coasts in large numbers. The fish is typically found in shallow, temperate waters and feeds primarily on plankton and small crustaceans. This beautiful illustration was drawn and engraved by Edward Donovan for his "Natural History of British Fishes," published by Donovan and F.C. and J. Rivington in London between 1802 and 1808. Donovan was a renowned Irish naturalist, artist, and illustrator, who produced some of the most detailed and accurate fish illustrations of his time. The hand-coloring of this print adds to its aesthetic appeal and makes it a true work of art. The European pilchard print is a testament to the scientific curiosity and artistic skill of the past, and remains an important historical record of this fascinating species.
