EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate print showcases the European Hake, Merluccius merluccius, also known as the Common Hake or the Atlantic Hake. The intricately detailed illustration was drawn and engraved by Edward Donovan for his seminal work, "Natural History of British Fishes," published by Donovan and F.C. and J. Rivington in London between 1802 and 1808. The European Hake is a large, flatfish that is native to the North Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. They can grow up to 120 cm in length and weigh up to 10 kg. Their body is elongated and laterally compressed, with a large head and small, beak-like mouth. The European Hake is a highly valued food fish, known for its white, flaky flesh with a mild, sweet taste. Donovan's illustration captures the European Hake in its natural habitat, surrounded by the vibrant colors and diverse marine life of the ocean. The artist meticulously rendered every detail of the fish's scales, fins, and gills, as well as the intricate patterns on its body. The background is filled with a rich array of other marine organisms, including starfish, sea anemones, and various types of algae. The publication of Donovan's "Natural History of British Fishes" was a significant contribution to the fields of ichthyology and zoology, providing a detailed record of the diverse fish species found in British waters. This beautiful and informative work remains an important resource for scientists, fisheries managers, and anyone interested in the natural history of the marine environment.
