EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts the Elephant Creeper, Argyreia nervosa, a beautiful and intriguing vine native to India. The image is taken from Lena Lowis's "Familiar Indian Flowers with Coloured Plates," published by L. Reeve in London in 1878. Lena Lowis, formerly Selena Caroline Shakespear, was a British woman artist who traveled to India with her husband, Lt.-Col. Ninian Lowis. Her extensive knowledge of Indian flora is evident in this stunning illustration, which was produced by D. Blair after an original drawing by Lowis herself. The Elephant Creeper is also known by various other names, including the Hawaiian baby woodrose, Adhoguda, Vidhara, and Woolly morning glory. Its distinctive features include its large, heart-shaped leaves and its elegant, trumpet-shaped flowers, which come in shades of pink, purple, and white. The vine derives its common name from the resemblance of its seed pods to the shape of an elephant's foot. The Elephant Creeper is a climbing plant that can grow up to 30 feet long and is known for its rapid growth. It is a popular ornamental plant in many parts of the world and is also used in traditional medicine for various ailments. The seeds of the plant contain the psychoactive compound LSA, which is related to LSD and can produce hallucinogenic effects when ingested. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph is a testament to Lowis's skill as an artist and her deep appreciation for the natural beauty of India. It is a valuable addition to any botanical collection and a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the Indian subcontinent.
