EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken in the late 19th century, we find two of the most iconic figures in the history of cricket: E M Grace and W G Grace. Known as "The Doctor" and "The Great W.G." respectively, these cricketers left indelible marks on the sport, both as exceptional players and pioneers. E M Grace, Edward Maurice Grace, is depicted on the left, with a thoughtful expression and a well-groomed mustache. He was a skilled all-rounder, excelling in both batting and bowling. His brother, W G Grace, or W.G. for short, is seen on the right, with a confident grin and a prominent handlebar mustache. W.G. is widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder in the history of cricket, with an impressive batting average of 40.77 and a bowling average of 22.20. The brothers' impact on cricket extended beyond their individual achievements. They were instrumental in popularizing the game and turning it into a national pastime in England. Their innovative playing styles and charisma attracted large crowds to the stadiums, leading to increased commercial opportunities for the sport. This studio portrait captures the essence of the Victorian era, with the brothers dressed in formal attire and posing against a plain backdrop. The photograph is a testament to their enduring legacy and the rich history of cricket. The brothers' influence on the sport continues to be felt today, as they are remembered as trailblazers and inspirations for generations of cricketers.
