EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph showcases a stunning collection of Cyrtoidea and Radiolaria protozoa skeletons, illustrated by Ernst Haeckel and published in his seminal work, "Art Forms in Nature" in 1904. The intricately detailed print features eleven distinct species, each with its unique and mesmerizing structure. The first skeleton, identified as Artostrobiidae species 1, displays a complex spiral form reminiscent of a cyrtophormis or spiralis. Next, Clathrocanium reginae presents a beautiful, intricately branched skeleton, resembling a starfish or a coral. The third skeleton, Pterocorythidae species 3, exhibits a distinctive rhinoceros-like shape, while Lipmanella bombus showcases a spherical form with radiating arms. Theoperidae species 5 and Thyrsocyrtis species 6 display elongated, slender structures, with the former featuring a distinct, pointed tip. Calocyclas monumentum, with its large, circular form, is a striking contrast to the delicate Pterocanium trilobum, which boasts three lobes and a delicate, filamentous structure. Amphipyndacidae species 9 and Nassellaria species 10 showcase skeletons with complex, net-like structures, while Pterocanium elegans rounds out the collection with its elegant, curved form. Each of these fascinating organisms, captured in exquisite detail, offers a glimpse into the intricate and beautiful world of protozoan skeletons.
