EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Coxcomb Prominent, Ptilodon capucinus, a striking and intricately patterned moth belonging to the family Notodontidae. The Coxcomb Prominent is native to North and Central America and is named for the distinctive tufts of hair on its head, resembling the feathers of a coxcomb. The engraving, created by the skilled hand of Johann Carl Bock, is part of Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur, published in Erlangen in 1786. The work is considered one of the most important early works on the natural history of butterflies and moths, featuring meticulously detailed illustrations of over 300 species. The Coxcomb Prominent is shown here in various stages of its life cycle. In the upper left corner, a caterpillar, or larva, can be seen feeding on a maple leaf. Below it, a pupa, or chrysalis, is shown in the process of transforming into an adult moth. In the center, the adult moth is depicted with its wings spread wide, revealing the intricate patterns and colors that make it such a beautiful and fascinating creature. The Coxcomb Prominent is not the only moth featured in this engraving. Also present are the Maple Cucullia, Phalaena camelina, and the Heart Dicycla, Oo. The Maple Cucullia, a small moth with a wingspan of only about 1 inch, is shown in the upper right corner. The Heart Dicycla, with its distinctive heart-shaped markings, is depicted in the lower right corner. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the natural beauty and complexity of the world around us and the dedication of early naturalists to documenting and preserving it for future generations.
