EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Cook Pine, scientifically known as Araucaria columnaris, also referred to as the Norfolk Island Pine or Araucaria excelsa. The image is taken from an illustration by Desire Bois, published in Edward Step's "Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse," released by Frederick Warne in London in 1896. The Cook Pine is a unique and intriguing conifer native to the subtropical Norfolk Island in the Pacific Ocean. Its distinctive shape, with its long, slender branches and dense, spherical crown, resembles that of a traditional Christmas tree. Surrounding the Cook Pine in this illustration are various exotic and vibrant flowers, adding a burst of color and contrast to the evergreen pine. Among these are the Masdevallia, Coccinea, Trisetella, Gemmata, Dracula, Chimaera, and Herincq. These flowers were likely popular choices for Victorian-era greenhouses and gardens, as they were considered rare and exotic. The Cook Pine was a favorite among horticulturists and botanists during the Victorian era due to its unique beauty and ability to thrive in temperate environments. The illustration serves as a testament to the fascination and appreciation for the natural world during this time, as well as the advancements in botanical illustration techniques, such as chromolithography, which allowed for vibrant and detailed depictions of these fascinating plants and flowers.
