EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts Clove (Syzygium aromaticum, formerly known as Eugenia caryophyllata), a small evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. The tree is renowned for its distinctive, aromatic buds, which have been used for centuries in various forms of traditional medicine and as a flavoring agent in culinary applications. The botanical illustration, created by David Blair and published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" in 1880, provides a detailed and accurate representation of the plant. The intricately rendered leaves, branches, and buds are brought to life through the skilled hand of lithographer Hanhart, who expertly applied colors to the printed image. Clove trees can grow up to 8 meters tall and produce ellipsoid-shaped fruits, each containing several small, reddish-brown buds. These buds are harvested before they fully open and are used for their medicinal and culinary properties. They contain a high concentration of eugenol, a volatile oil that gives cloves their distinct, pungent aroma and flavor. In traditional medicine, cloves have been used to treat a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, toothaches, and respiratory problems. They have also been used as an antiseptic and an anti-inflammatory agent. In the culinary world, cloves are a popular spice in dishes from around the world, adding depth and warmth to savory and sweet dishes alike. This beautiful and informative print serves as a testament to the rich history and versatility of cloves, both as a medicinal plant and as a beloved spice.
