Ned Kelly's Last Stand

EDITORS COMMENTS
is an iconic image in Australian history, depicting the notorious bushranger Ned Kelly making his final defiant stand against the Victorian police forces on November 28, 1880. This photograph, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the raw intensity and determination of the outlaw who became a legend. Born in Victoria in 1854, Kelly and his gang of bushrangers terrorized the region for years, robbing banks and post offices, and evading capture. After a series of daring escapes, Kelly and his gang were cornered by a large police force at Glenrowan, a small town in northern Victoria. In a desperate bid to elude capture, Kelly and his gang donned homemade armor made of metal plates and engaged in a fierce gunfight with the police. This photograph captures the moment when Kelly, wearing his infamous armor, stands defiantly in the face of overwhelming odds. Despite the bravery and determination of Kelly and his gang, they were ultimately no match for the well-armed and well-trained police force. Kelly was captured, along with his sister and two others, and was later hanged on November 11, 1880. Despite his criminal past, Ned Kelly has become a symbol of Australian folklore and resistance against authority. His story has been immortalized in books, films, and songs, and his armor is now on display at the Museum of Victoria in Melbourne. This photograph, with its powerful imagery and historical significance, is a testament to the enduring legacy of this Australian legend. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the complexities of Australian history, where figures like Ned Kelly, who were once considered outlaws and criminals, have become symbols of national pride and identity. It is a powerful image that continues to captivate and inspire generations of Australians and visitors to the country.
