EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of the infamous Glenrowan Inn siege in Australia during the late 19th century. The image portrays the ruins of the hotel, which once stood as a notorious hideout for the Kelly Gang, a group of outlaws led by the legendary figure, Ned Kelly. Ned Kelly and his associates had planned to derail a train carrying a large contingent of police officers in an attempt to free some of their comrades from custody. However, their plan was foiled when one of their hostages managed to escape and alert the oncoming train, which came to a halt just in time, averting a potential disaster. With the police now aware of the gang's whereabouts, they laid siege on the Glenrowan Inn. The ensuing standoff resulted in the deaths of three members of the Kelly Gang and the capture of Ned Kelly himself. The image of the hotel's destroyed facade serves as a poignant reminder of the violent criminal history that once unfolded on this site. The 19th century in Australia was marked by a wave of crime and lawlessness, and the Kelly Gang became a symbol of resistance against the authorities. Their exploits continue to fascinate Australians to this day, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into a dark chapter of the country's past.
