EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the dramatic moment when Jacques Necker, the Swiss financier and statesman, was taken into the arms of the Parisian mob during the French Revolution in 1789. Necker, born in 1732 in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland, had risen to prominence in France as a financial advisor to the royal family. His reforms, including the reduction of taxes and the establishment of a national bank, earned him the loyalty of the common people. However, his support for the monarchy and his unpopular financial policies led to his downfall. On July 12, 1789, a mob of Parisians stormed the Bastille fortress, marking the beginning of the French Revolution. Three days later, Necker was summoned to the National Assembly to present his financial report. The crowd, which had gathered outside the assembly, grew restless and demanded that Necker be handed over to them. Fearing for his safety, Necker attempted to flee, but was intercepted and taken into the protective arms of the mob. Despite the initial jubilation, Necker's capture marked the end of his political career. He was eventually exiled from France and died in Switzerland in 1804. This historical print, created in the late 19th or early 20th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in the French Revolution and the complex relationship between the people and their leaders.
