EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the corner view of the historic Adelaide PH, Islington (New), London, as it looked in the 1930s. The Adelaide, located at N1 1NP, was a cherished local pub with a rich history that dates back to at least 1929, as evidenced by the trading record detailed on the reverse of this print. In its early years, the pub was part of the Charrington & Co. Limited estate, a prominent brewing company in London. The photograph, taken in 1938, showcases the classic design of the pub facade, with its ornate signage and red brick exterior. The Adelaide was a popular gathering place for the community, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere for locals to socialize and enjoy a pint. Over the decades, the Adelaide underwent several changes. In 1985, it was renamed Scullys. By July 2018, the building had been repurposed as offices, with an IT company occupying the space. Despite these transformations, the Adelaide remains an important piece of Islington's history, serving as a reminder of the area's rich past and the role that pubs played in shaping the community. This photograph, kindly provided by The National Brewery Heritage Trust from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a unique glimpse into London's pub history and the Adelaide's storied past. Whether you're a history buff, a local resident, or simply someone who appreciates the charm of a well-loved public house, this print is a must-have addition to any collection.
