Despite their dire situation, the three men refused to give up hope. They managed to fashion a sail from their boat's sails and began rowing towards the nearest land, which they believed to be Tristan da Cunha, a remote island in the South Atlantic. After 143 days at sea, they were finally rescued by the SS Deo-Gloria, a passing ship that had spotted their distress signals. This sketch likely depicts the moment when the SS Deo-Gloria came to the rescue, towed the lifeboat to safety, and brought the exhausted and malnourished survivors aboard.
