Having witnessed the relentless advance of the Allied forces, which had forced his Garde Imperiale to retreat, Napoleon realized that defeat was imminent. With a heavy heart, he mounted his horse and rode away from the battlefield, passing the inn La Belle Alliance in his flight. The defeat at Waterloo marked the end of Napoleon's reign as the Emperor of the French and began the century-long exile that would ultimately end with his death on the island of Saint Helena.
