EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic and beloved figure of Emma Gifford Hardy (1841-1912), the first wife of renowned English novelist and poet, Thomas Hardy. Taken in the summer of 1908, Emma is depicted in her later years, with a gentle and melancholic expression that seems to hint at the depth of emotion and passion that inspired some of Hardy's most moving love poems. Emma, who was known as 'Mrs. Hardy' to her husband's admirers, was a significant influence on Hardy's literary career. They married in 1874 and remained together until her death in 1912, an event that deeply affected Hardy and led him to write some of his most poignant works. The month of August, in the year of 1912, brought an unexpected and tragic turn to the lives of Thomas and Emma Hardy. Emma, who had been suffering from a long illness, passed away on the 11th of that month, leaving Thomas devastated and heartbroken. In the following months, Hardy poured out his grief and love for his wife into his writing, producing some of his most memorable and moving poems. This photograph, taken just four years before Emma's death, is an important historical artifact that offers a glimpse into the personal life of one of literature's most celebrated figures. It serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that love and loss can have on the human spirit, and the enduring power of art to capture and express the complexities of emotion.
