EDITORS COMMENTS
Mombasa, Kenya - The Old Tower: A Glimpse into History This evocative photograph captures the Old Tower of Mombasa, Kenya, standing proudly on the eastern shores of the Old Port. The Old Tower, a series of several stone obelisks, dates back to the late 16th century and is believed to have been located near Fort Jesus. Fort Jesus, a Portuguese fortification, was built during the late 16th century to strengthen Portugal's control over the Indian Ocean trade routes. The obelisks, possibly numbering around twelve, likely functioned as daybeacons, guiding ships safely into the Old Port of Mombasa. The Old Tower's history is deeply intertwined with the rich maritime heritage of Mombasa. The towers, made of coral stone, have withstood the test of time, providing a testament to the city's rich past. The intricate carvings on the obelisks, though faded, hint at the craftsmanship and artistry of the artisans who created them. This photograph, taken circa 1909, offers a glimpse into the history of Mombasa, a city that has played a pivotal role in the Indian Ocean trade for centuries. The Old Tower stands as a reminder of the city's rich history and its significance as a major trading hub in the region. As you gaze upon this image, imagine the bustling port activity, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, and the hustle and bustle of merchants and sailors going about their daily business. The Old Tower of Mombasa is not just a historical landmark, but a living testament to the city's vibrant past and enduring spirit.
