EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known by his stage name Molière (1622-1673), a legendary figure in the world of French literature and theater. Born in Paris, Molière began his career as an actor in the early 1640s, eventually forming his own theatrical troupe, the Illustre Théâtre, in 1643. The troupe would later be renamed the Troupe de Monsieur, under the patronage of King Louis XIV. Molière's contributions to French theater are immeasurable. He wrote over thirty plays, many of which are still performed today, including "Tartuffe," "The Misanthrope," and "The Imaginary Invalid." His works explored the complexities of human nature and societal norms, often using satire and comedy to critique the hypocrisies and follies of the time. In this print, Molière is depicted in the character of Delpech from his play "The School for Wives," first performed in 1662. The play is a comedic exploration of the themes of jealousy, deception, and the misunderstandings that can arise from miscommunication. Delpech, a character known for his gullibility and naivety, is a perfect representation of the comedic situations Molière masterfully crafted. This print serves as a testament to Molière's enduring impact on French culture and the world of theater. His plays continue to be celebrated for their wit, insight, and timeless relevance. This image, with its intricate details and lifelike portrayal of Molière, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to connect with the man behind the iconic figure we know as Molière.
