EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the USS Mississippi (BB-41), a pre-World War One warship, making its passage through the newly completed Panama Canal in 1915. The Mississippi, named after the famous American river, is one of many ships bearing this distinguished name in the United States Navy. The Panama Canal, an engineering marvel of the early 20th century, revolutionized international maritime trade by providing a direct sea route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, significantly reducing the lengthy and treacherous journey around the southern tip of South America. The canal's construction was completed in 1914, and the first ships began passing through its locks shortly thereafter. The USS Mississippi, a powerful battlecruiser, was commissioned in 1911 and served in the United States Atlantic Fleet during World War I. Measuring over 600 feet in length and displacing more than 12,000 tons, the warship was a formidable presence on the water. In this photograph, the Mississippi is seen passing through the Pedro Miguel Locks, located in the central part of the canal. The locks are designed to lift ships up or lower them down to the level of the next body of water, allowing them to continue their journey. The Mississippi, with its impressive size and might, appears dwarfed by the surrounding landscape, yet its presence is undeniable. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the rich history of both the USS Mississippi and the Panama Canal. It serves as a reminder of the technological advancements and engineering feats that have shaped the world we live in today.
